There was much that Cali didn’t understand—his feelings for Jonathan, the message he had receive from Allah, and why his father acted the way he did? Was quitting his job and striking out on his own, the answer? He didn’t know for sure, but ultimately, he decided that it was the right thing to do. He said goodbye to his best friend and left to find the uncle who, according to his father, held the same religious convictions as he did.
It was a long and dangerous journey and took most of the money he had saved to make the trip. When he arrived at the airport in Mogadishu, he was lost, still unsure of the religious message he had received, and more importantly, where to find his uncle--the man who would introduce him to the Emir of Al-Shabaab and to whom he would eventually become an understudy.
The young Somali-American soon learned the ways of Al-Shabaab, learned how to fight, and learned that the United States Government was the biggest impediment to the successful overthrow of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia—an Al-Shabaab objective in the civil war they were fighting to convert the country into an Islamic State.
The Emir, wise in his ways, soon realized Cali had been sent by Allah, to be used as an instrument, a means that would enable him to strike back at the United States. He wanted to show the Americans that Al-Shabaab could strike the U.S. homeland in a deadly, devastating manner, just as the U.S. military had done to his people in Somalia. Now, after two years of understudy, Cali Mahdi was heading back home, on a mission, a mission of deadly consequences.

Miss Betsy was beside herself when Mike walked into the office the next day carrying a paper tray holding two coffees and a couple of chocolate-covered donuts. He sat the tray down, removed a coffee from the tray, and handed it to her. She opened a desk drawer and retrieved the envelope he had given her the day before. He took the envelope and smiled as she reached for one of the donuts.
"Thanks," he said.
"Thank you," she replied.
The exchange was all they needed to make each other's day. Mike walked into his inner office while Miss Betsy began her workday by typing a quick email to a colleague.
"He's back," she wrote.
Mike turned on his computer and waited for the sign-in screen to pop up. He knew that Miss Betsy and Lila were good friends. He figured that five minutes was about all the time he needed to kill before the secretarial network kicked into gear and the DDO was informed that he had returned to work. He waited a few more minutes, just in case, and they picked up the phone.
"Operations Directorate," he heard Lila say.
"Good morning, Lila. This is Mike Shocklee. Is Claire available?"
"Oh, good morning, Mike. I'm surprised to hear your voice. Yes, she's in. Just a moment and I'll put you through."
Yeah, she knew, he thought while waiting for Windstrum to come on the line.
Seconds later, he heard her voice.
"Good morning, Mike."
"Good morning, Claire."
"I won't say that it comes as a total surprise to hear from you, Mike, but it is a good surprise in any event. I'm glad you've had a change of heart."
"Yeah, I'm back on the job, Claire, but for how long I don't know. But you probably knew that from talking to Scotty. My sticking around after we get Cali Mahdi depends on who's going to be running operations: you or the director."
"Yes, I asked him to talk to you, and I'm glad that I did. As for who's running ops, that's something that I'll be happy to discuss with you at a later date, but not over the phone."
There was a small hesitation before Mike answered.
"OK, Claire, I'll take you up on that, say in about fifteen minutes."
"Hold on just a minute, Mike." She paused. "All right," she said, a few seconds later. "I've cleared my calendar; come on over."

Jack Kassinger was raised in Kentucky. After high school, he joined the Marine Corps and served in Viet Nam. He was wounded in action on Memorial Day 1969. He subsequently joined the Central Intelligence Agency and served overseas in various locations. He retired from the CIA in 1995 as a Senior Intelligence Officer. During his service with the CIA, he received numerous awards for valor and heroism. He currently resides in Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas with his wife Cherie.
